Between Ancient Times and Pre-Qin Period, Chinese people holded sacrificial activities by years for celebrating a bountiful harvest.
In the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu of Han promulgated the "Taichu Calendar"（太初历），and stipulate the first day of the first lunar month as the beginning of the new year (in ancient times, the Lunar New Year was referred to as the beginning of the new year, New Year's Day).
In 1914, Lunar New Year was renamed as the Spring Festival.
